Talking with Laurence Cutler

Editor Ray Copson enjoyed speaking with Laurence Cutler by phone last evening.  Laurence and Judy have just returned from London, where the exhibit Norman Rockwell’s America is doing very well.  The show is on through March 27, so be sure to attend if you’re in the area.

Like so many Copsons, Laurence has a number of Thomases in his background, and like Ray, he has a connection to Nuneaton.  His ancestor William F. Copson was a success in the elastic webbing business, and again like Ray, Laurence is a proud owner of a copy of The History and Romance of Elastic Webbing, a Bible for American Copsons.

Martin Hughes Asks After Annie Copson (So Many Thomases!)

Hi Ray,

I’m Martin Hughes and I’m looking for any information on my great grand mother Annie Elizabeth Copson, I believe she was born in  June 1891 in the Black Heath, Rowley Regis area in the heart of the Black Country possibly in an area called Cakemoor.

I have her marriage certificate where it shows that she married Henry Gilliam in 1912, and that her Father’s name was Thomas Copson. She appears in the 1911 census but is working in service, so no mention of family.

I cannot find her birth certificate or any information on her family. Annie or her farther do not appear to be in the 1901 Census and I can’t find Thomas in the 1891 or 1911 Census, and cannot find marriage or death certificates for him.

There is a Thomas Copson in the 1871 Census, unmarried, living in Cakemoor, but I cannot find any other information to make a positive match, although there certainly wasn’t many Copsons in the area at the time.

The only information is that my Grandmother told me that Annie had 2 brothers, Thomas and George and a sister Polly (perhaps Mary). Any information would be gratefully received.

Kind Regards,

Martin Hughes, hughtinmar@yahoo.co.uk

Message from Geoff, One of the Wigston Magna Mob

From: Geoff Copson <geoff.copson@yahoo.co.uk>

Subject: Copsons
To: ray@copson.org

I’m Geoff Copson coming down from the Wigston Magna mob via John Copson(1850) and William James Copson(1873). The weather and retirement found me doing some geneology with computer and some paperwork my brother Derek sent me some years ago. I found the Copson Chronicles and enjoyed them very much although I haven’t studied every page as yet. There seem to be origins in Worcestershire, Wigston and Coventry.
I intend to go to the Leicestershire archives when the weather impoves to search Parish records to try and go back before John Copson and Jane Williamson but wondered if, amonst your members, it has already been done and is accessible to all.
Amonst some papers my Aunt Betty (Bessie)Copson left me I’ve found John Copson’s(1850) original Will and birth cetificate some certificates from the Caswells, who were Ethel Mary Black’s Step father and his brother. Also a masonic documents from Bristol for my Grand Father, William James.
Thank you for an enjoyable Web site
Regards,
Geoff Copson

To: Ray@copson.org [best to use Copsons@gmail.com these days]

Hello Ray, Did you ever find the link between your Grandfather Ernest H Copson and Muriel Copson ??

We would be interested to hear from you

We have caught the bug

Please email

Cheers from Coventry

____

Hi, Claire

I know that my grandparents, Ernest Copson and Elsie Kendall Copson once drove down to Wilmington, Deleware from Easthampton, Massachusetts, to visit the cousins there.  Muriel was probably among them, back in the 1940s or so.  My grandparents didn’t travel much, so the relationship must have been special to them.  I’m sure the families were tied together back in England, probably in Coventry, but exactly how, I’ve never determined.

Can you make the link?

Ray

Laurence and Judy Cutler Post Their UK Coordinates

Laurence and Judy Cutler are going to be in the UK in December and would love to meet Copsons of a genealogical inclination.  Any advice on doing genealogical research would be welcome.

Laurence writes

“We are installing a Norman Rockwell art exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery in South London (12 minutes by train from Victoria).

“We will be in England from December 5th through the 18th,  and will visit with a number of notables, including a delegation from Shanghai which has asked us to consider helping them build  a replica of our museum, building and contents, in the Pudong (Silicon Valley of the PRC) area of Shanghai.

“Dulwich Picture Gallery is England’s oldest art museum and our exhibition will celebrate  their 200th Anniversary (1811-2011).  DPG specializes in the Old Masters, so to have an American artist, especially Rockwell for their 200th is a big deal in the art world.
The exhibition is sponsored by Wall Street Journal, Virgin Atlantic, US Embassy, Saturday Evening Post, and others.

“I remember from many years ago that in England, one could find ancestors emigration records at Somerset House in London.  I will try to visit there again to do some more Copson family research.  We will be staying at the Hilton Hotel Green Park on Half Moon Street (tel: 44.207.629.75220, just off Piccadilly during the course of our visit.
If any Copsons in the UK or USA wish to contact us while we are in England, please do.”

Editor’s note” at least until departure, Laurence can be contacted at lcutler@americanillustration.org.

Enjoy your trip!  Sounds very exciting.

Keith Clarke Responds to DNA Test Proposal

Hi Nigel,
Noticed your blog on the Copson website ref: Ydna on Family Tree DNA I am descended from Copsons in Warwick, Warwickshire who descend from Richard Copson of Coventry who died in 1841 in Rowleys Green ..I haven’t found his birth but do know that he was born according to the 1841 census out of Warwickshire..
I obviously can’t have a Ydna link..But I have had a Autosomonal Test (Family Finder) on Familytree…But as Autosomonal DNA can only be traced back five generations I still qualify and think it’s an excellent idea having a Surname Project..
Best regards,
Keith Clarke
Editor’s Note:  Editor Ray Copson of Bluff Point, NY, is a Rowley’s Green Copson too and definitely interested in this project.  However, the Family Tree DNA Project is a bit pricey.  Before I go ahead, I would like to know that some others are participating.  Let me know at copsons@gmail.com
